This professional learning offers a unique opportunity to engage with tertiary educators and industry professionals. The program provides essential insights into the increasing demand for mathematics and statistics in the workforce, the increasing range and scope of careers that rely on these skills, and the educational pathways that lead to these professions.

AMSI’s 2024 Year 12 Participation Report shows that Australia is experiencing a decline in mathematics participation at secondary school, where enrolments in higher‑level mathematics courses are now at an all‑time low for both genders. This low student interest in maths is impacting the next generation of mathematically capable university graduates. Critically, there is persistent inequity in female participation in STEM studies and careers. By equipping educators with knowledge about careers and pathways requiring maths skills, we aim to foster a diverse, numerically capable workforce for Australia’s future.
This professional development program is made possible through funding from The Invergowrie Foundation and collaborations with industry partners, universities and associations.
This initiative aims to support underrepresented groups, including females, First Nations and regional students, and those from low SES backgrounds.

An AMSI Family Maths Night is a fun, interactive event designed to engage school communities in the joy and relevance of mathematics. Facilitated by AMSI’s maths teaching specialist and run in partnership with schools, these evenings bring together students, parents, and teachers to explore how mathematics is taught today and why it has changed. The night typically includes hands-on games and activities, group discussions, and opportunities for parents to experience the kinds of problem-solving and thinking tasks their children do in the classroom. The goal is to promote a deeper understanding of current teaching practices, highlight the importance of building mental computation strategies, and encourage families to support their child’s mathematical learning in everyday life. All this and Pizza too!
Ultimately, it’s about making maths meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.
