AMSI Remembers Professor Lynn Batten
It is with a great sadness that members and staff of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) mark the passing of Professor Lynn Batten.
Lynn played an instrumental role in the creation of AMSI, having prompted the initial application for Institute funding from the Victorian Government’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) infrastructure program.
Before joining Deakin University in 2000, Lynn had been involved in all three of Canada’s mathematical institutes, including time on the Fields Institute board and executive, and was enthusiastic about a Fields model in Australia. In 2001, she suggested the STI funding to Professor Tony Guttmann and Ms Jan Thomas, who then wrote the proposal that resulted in AMSI’s creation. Lynn was an invaluable wealth of knowledge on the operation and governance of mathematical institutes and served on the board of AMSI Directors for several years.
At Deakin, Lynn was a Professor of Mathematics in the School of IT, a member of the Academic Board and Professor Emerita. She was a leader in mathematics and cyber security, playing a significant part in initiating Deakin’s first course in IT Security and connecting the University with cyber security industry. She made major contributions to further the status and participation of women in mathematics and made many contributions to Australian mathematical sciences including through AMSI workshops and participating in the Maths in Industry study group.
AMSI and the broader mathematical community will always be indebted to Lynn for her contribution and generosity. AMSI extends its sincere condolences to Lynn’s family and colleagues.
