STEM teachers and careers advisers from across Victoria attended AMSI’s Industry Day for Teachers event in Melbourne on 30 July 2026. The innovative professional development event for high school educators is designed to highlight the many career opportunities open to mathematics, specialist mathematics and STEM students.
Hosted by Swinburne University of Technology and AMSI industry partner CSL, the Invergowrie Foundation-funded event took place at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus (morning session) and at CSL’s state-of-the-art global headquarters in Parkville (afternoon session).
By showcasing the many exciting career opportunities open to maths students across Australia, the free event sought to provide teachers and careers advisers with the necessary knowledge and tools to inspire their students to confidently choose STEM subjects at high school level, aware that choosing these areas of study has the potential to enrich and diversify their study and career options later in life.
From AI to engineering, modelling to gem faceting, attendees learned about the wide range of careers influenced by mathematics and the increased demand for maths and stats in the workforce.
The morning session at Swinburne commenced with Plante founder Nguyen Hanh Nguyen, who spoke about how mathematical thinking shaped the company’s innovative plastic-free biodegradable planting products. Other industry speakers included AI researcher and CoCo the Creator founder Duy Khoa Pham (pictured), who examined how maths guides the governance of AI agents.
Following a program of further industry and academic speakers, the event moved to CSL’s global headquarters in Parkville, where attendees were treated to a lab tour, employee panel conversation, and a Q&A session. Hearing first-hand from a diverse cohort of CSL employees encouraged teachers to appreciate the critical role maths plays in underpinning the fundamental operations of biomedical companies like CSL.
Speaking after the event, AMSI Director Professor Tim Marchant said: “Maths is the language that underpins the modern world. It takes an event like this to illustrate to teachers that a student who studies mathematics all the way through to Year 12 is one with endless study and employment opportunities.”
