Speaking ahead of the launch of the Australian Academy of Science’s ten-year vision for the improvement of Australian Mathematics, AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince called for urgent attention to address the nation’s maths deficit. Developed by the National Committee for the Mathematical Sciences, The Mathematical Sciences in Australia: A vision for 2025 provides government, universities and industry with a blueprint for the protection of Australia’s mathematical sciences. With only 14 per cent of universities requiring intermediate mathematics for entry into STEM degrees, the Committee, headed by Professor Nalini Joshi has focused its recommendations on education including teacher training and reintroduction of mathematics prerequisites.
