The Defence Science Institute (DSI) has partnered with the APR.Intern program to access high-end quantitative and analytical expertise, from within Victoria’s leading universities, to benefit the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and the defence industry.

Through the partnership DSI, a Victorian Government supported institute, aims to connect highly qualified PhD researchers — from across all disciplines — with industry partners to address a research challenge currently facing their business.

Melbourne-based Associate Director of DSI, Associate Professor Simon Ng, says: “This alliance with APR.Intern is central to our strategy to build stronger industry-university connections for the benefit of defence R&D. Rather than duplicate AMSI’s very successful program, we will work with our industry stakeholders to support their access to the expertise the AMSI program provides.”

Research projects conceived from the partnership will run between four to five months in which industry partners are set to receive additional specialist knowledge from the students’ academic mentor — all IP will remain with the business.

Projects will aim to align with DSI’s current strategy and will focus on four core technology themes in the areas of:

– Human Protection and Performance
– Modelling and Simulation
– Propulsion and Energy Storage
– Surveillance and Autonomy

Financial support from DSI will be limited to five placements with a limit of one project per company for Victorian-based organisations within the defence sector.

Cate Ballard, National Program Manager, APR.Intern says: “We are excited about this new partnership with DSI and in particular connecting with the defence sector. Our placements can offer industry a platform to further develop and innovate their business.”
