The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) announces a three-year partnership with The William Buckland Foundation.

An up-skilling program offered by Schools Connect Australia — formerly the Business Working with Education Foundation — has assisted AMSI to secure essential funding for The Improving Mathematics Education in Schools (TIMES) program.

This program will be funded by a grant from The William Buckland Foundation.

“With the backing of The William Buckland Foundation, schools will have the support they need to deliver a well thought through program in mathematics. This is a very exciting opportunity,” said Janine McIntosh, Schools Manager, AMSI.

The TIMES Program works to increase the number of qualified mathematics teachers, whilst simultaneously assisting our teachers teaching ‘out of area’. This funding will allow AMSI to work with clusters of secondary schools and their feeder primary schools in the Geelong region.

AMSI specialists visit schools to support teachers. They act as mentors and conduct professional development workshops. This builds teacher confidence and preparedness, which is essential to inspire and engage our students with mathematics.

“AMSI is particularly pleased to be working with The William Buckland Foundation to improve the mathematics experience in our schools,” said Prof. Geoff Prince, Director, AMSI.

If we want to be the clever country, we need more innovation to improve our productivity. Too few people realise that maths and stats are vital to every step of this process. To secure funding of this nature from the private sector rather than government illustrates that the wider economy is beginning to appreciate that the pipeline of maths and stats education essentially safeguards our future.

The William Buckland Foundation was established in 1964 through the Will of William Lionel Buckland. With careful stewardship by the Foundation’s Trustees, William Buckland’s legacy supports organisations, activities and projects that create lasting public benefit for the Victorian community. Scientific and educational activities are a particular focus of the Foundation.
