Terry Speed is one of Australia’s eminent statisticians. In May this year he was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society and today he is honoured with Australia’s highest award for excellence in science – The PM’s Prize for Science.
Terry has worked with AMSI staff for the last decade. And he is a very strong advocate for the mathematical sciences.
AMSI Director, Professor Geoff Prince, said: “On behalf of all Terry’s colleagues and friends in the entire AMSI membership, I congratulate him on an outstanding achievement, another high point in a stellar career.
“Terry’s commitment to the mathematical sciences is exceptional and a model to us all.”
Terry said: “It’s great to see this level of recognition for the mathematical sciences. Australia has a wonderful tradition in this area, but sadly, the number of secondary school students taking “strong” mathematics subjects continues to decline.
“I hope that this recognition can contribute to the national efforts — especially by AMSI — to reverse this trend.”
Professor Speed will inspire all attendees with his keynote presentation at AMSI’s Summer symposium on Bioinformatics.
