Helping launch the Australian Academy of Science’s ten-year plan for Australian mathematics, AMSI Director and National Committee for the Mathematical Sciences member, Professor Geoff Prince has singled out university maths prerequisites as a key factor in the nation’s maths deficit. Developed under the leadership of Committee Chair Professor Nalini Joshi, The Mathematical Sciences in Australia: A Vision for 2025 provides government, universities and industry with a blue print for the strengthening of Australian mathematics over the next decade. Professor Prince said the report’s key recommendations targeted all stages of the mathematics pipeline, including university mathematics prerequisites, out-of-field teacher training and the need for a National Research Centre.
