The mathematical sciences community is celebrating yesterday’s announcement of a $20m ARC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers of Big Data, Big Models, New Insights.
The new centre, a partnership of the University of Melbourne (UoM), Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the University of Adelaide, the University of Queensland, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of New South Wales, will create innovative mathematical and statistical models that can uncover the knowledge concealed within the size and complexity of today’s abundance of big data sets.
The models will focus on delivering insights into problems vital to the Centre’s Collaborative Domains: Healthy People, Sustainable Environments and Prosperous Societies.
The centre will be led by Professor Peter Hall from the University of Melbourne, one of the world’s leading statisticians, with an executive of Professors Jan de Gier (UoM), Kerrie Mengersen (QUT) and Louise Ryan (UTS).
“2013 has been a big year for the mathematical sciences with the success of Maths of Planet Earth, Prime Minister’s awards to Terry Speed and John Croucher and now this CoE announcement,” said Geoff Prince, Director, Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI).
“We are witnessing a genuine resurgence of the mathematical sciences in Australia. AMSI sends its congratulations to Peter Hall and his team.”
