Background to the scholarship

The Yuille-Umbers Female Specialist Maths Scholarships are to honour the legacies of Ethel (Elsie) Yuille and Catherine Mary (Maimie) Umbers, grandmothers of the founding donors, and aimed at empowering future generations of women through educational opportunities.

A descendant of early Ballarat settler William Cross Yuille, Elsie exemplified the pioneering spirit of her ancestor. Daughter of Frederick Umbers, Maimie was a key figure in the pioneering community of Poowong, in Gippsland. Both women overcame significant challenges and made substantial and unconventional contributions to their communities and families. These scholarships are dedicated to supporting female secondary school students, inspired by these trailblazing women.

Elsie Yuille was co-founding donor, Professor Tim Brown’s grandmother, and the grand-daughter of William Cross Yuille who was granted settlement of land around Ballarat before the gold-rush https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/yuille-william-cross-4909)

Maimie Umbers, was co-founding donor Catriona De Vere’s grandmother, and the daughter of Frederick Umbers, a pioneer of the Mallee who settled in Poowong, Gippsland (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/12143240 ).

“Our grandmothers, and mothers, were very strong women who overcame formidable challenges to make great contributions in distinctive and unconventional ways”.
