The Australian, 18 June 2016, Natasha Bita. AMSI Director, Professor Geoff Prince has warned that technology such as calculators should not be seen as a substitute for basic mathematics skills. Speaking to the Australian, he said students are increasingly leaving primary school without basic skills such as addition and subtraction. Calling for a better balance of high-tech and old school back-to-basics teaching in Australian classrooms, he said the focus needed to be on outcomes rather than tools when laying the foundations for numeracy.
