One of the hardest things to do as a peak body for maths, is to distil into a succinct statement, the fundamental importance of maths. A recent article in The Guardian has helped with this, highlighting how maths has shaped the modern world and its ongoing influence on societal advancement. From what were seen as controversial, maverick and abstract ideas at the turn of the century, countless mathematical concepts now form the cornerstone of many technologies that have become commonplace and underpin what is now modern life.

AMSI recognises the intrinsic value of mathematics and its cultural impact over the course of human history. Our 2024-2027 Strategy is all about strengthening the mathematical sciences pipeline so that mathematics can continue to positively shape society. We are working to reverse the concerning decline in mathematics participation at high school through targeted programs, advocacy, teacher resources and professional development, student scholarships, awards and prizes, conferences, career fairs; and forging stronger connections between research and industry through PhD internships.

We know not everyone wants to pursue mathematics at the most advanced levels. We need the blue-sky thinkers and researchers, and we need people with a strong foundation, so they can take up the growing scope and sheer number of jobs both now and in the future, that require maths.

Coming soon is our biennial flagship report that profiles the discipline of maths in Australia. The highly anticipated State of the Mathematical Sciences will provide the latest data and lay out the policy priorities essential to ensure a robust mathematics base for the future.
