The Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) has honoured six of Australia’s leading mathematicians at a ceremony in Queensland this week.
Opening the 67th Annual Meeting of the AustMS, President, Professor Jessica Purcell, congratulated this year’s winners of the AustMS Medal, George Szekeres Medal, Gavin Brown Prize, Teaching Excellence Awards and Mahony-Neumann-Room Prize.
Dr Kevin Coulembier of the University of Sydney was awarded the 2023 AustMS Medal, recognising his international leadership in Lie theory and representation theory, and his outstanding contributions to the field by solving several important and prestigious problems, which remained open for many decades.
The AustMS Medal is awarded for distinguished research in the mathematical sciences to a member of the Society, within 15 years of the award of their PhD. Dr Coulembier’s work has been accredited with a medal from the Australian Academy of Science, an ARC Future Fellowship, a DECRA and two Discovery Projects.
The 2023 George Szekeres Medal – AustMS’s most prestigious medal recognising research achievement and outstanding support of the mathematical sciences – was awarded to Professor George Willis of University of Newcastle. Professor Willis is known internationally as an innovator and problem solver in diverse fields of mathematics. In topological algebra, his insights into locally compact groups and fundamental concepts that he has introduced, such as the scale function and flatness, have initiated new research directions and made new applications possible.
The 2023 Gavin Brown Prize for best paper was awarded to Yvonne M. Stokes (The University of Adelaide), Peter Buchak (LowReTech LLC, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA), Darren G. Crowdy (Imperial College London), Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem (The University of Adelaide) for their paper: ‘Drawing of micro-structured fibres: circular and non-circular tubes’ Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 755 (2014): 176-203. The 2023 Teaching Excellence Award was awarded to Associate Professor Artem Pulemotov of the University of Queensland, and the 2023 Teaching Excellence Award (Early Career) was awarded to Dr Sean Gardiner of UNSW.
The 2023 Mahony-Neumann-Room Prize for outstanding contributions to AustMS’s research publications was awarded to Jose Madrid for their paper, ‘Sharp inequalities for the variation of the discrete maximal function.’ Bulletin of the Australian Mathematical Society 95(1) (2017), 94-107.
AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant, said the AustMS awards were critical to recognise outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement.
