Australian school students never master multiplication ­tables, no longer learn long division and can’t add fractions by the time they get to university, national curriculum critics say.

The evolution of mathematics education in Australia has swung so far away from emphasising basic skills and towards “exploring” key concepts that the true beauty of the field is becoming lost on students and, in turn, the next generation of teachers, Melbourne mathematician Marty Ross said.
