AMSI held its final Industry Day for Teachers event for 2025 at Deakin University, Warrnambool on Wednesday 8 October.

The event program included an overview from each speaker of how diverse industries from across the region utilise high school maths skills and capabilities in their everyday roles.

Incredible opportunies

In the morning, we heard from speakers Ebony Perrin – Manager Operations Support & Projects, Wannon Water, Sean Mueglitz – Senior Project Engineer, Bulla Dairy Foods, Liam Arnott – Manager Construction, Maintenance & Emergencies, Moyne Shire Council and Tony Evans – Co-founder & Director, Camperdown Compost. Our speaker came from different industries, but they were all able to showcase the unique elements of their role that you wouldn’t expect to include maths, and why it is so important for teachers to raise awareness of the incredible opportunities that maths can present.

The afternoon featured Christine Maxwell – Literacy and Numeracy Teacher & Mr Matthew Keegan – Electrotechnology, Build, Construction & Smart Technologies Teacher and Jordan Smith – Head of Programs South West TAFE and Leanne McMahon (AMSI Schools) on the role of teachers in building self-efficacy and confidence in students to reduce maths anxiety.

Driving innovation

As this event was executed in partnership with Deakin University, the event was hosted at Hycel Technology Hub Tour, where we were able to take participants on a guided tour of Australia’s first dedicated hydrogen fuel cell research facility, unveiling real-world examples of how maths can be applied to solve complex problems and drive innovation.

Thank you to all teachers and guests who attended, our speakers, Hycel and Deakin University, Warrnambool.

We will be hosting more Industry Day events in 2026! If you are interested in attending, subscribe here to our fortnightly newsletter to receive information on when our first event will be held.
