The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) in collaboration with The University of Queensland (UQ) have been awarded funding from the UK-based International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) Mathematics for Humanity scheme to expand program impact and support international participation in the 2026 AMSI Winter School on Geometric Analysis.
The £30,000 (approx. AUD $61,600) grant will provide vital support for participants from South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands to attend the event in-person, which will run at UQ in Brisbane, Australia from 29 June – 10 July 2026 in a hybrid format.
Focusing on Geometric Analysis, a field at the intersection of differential geometry and partial differential equations, the 2026 Winter School program will feature four intensive short courses, delivered through interactive lectures, tutorials, and problem-solving sessions.
The program will also create ongoing mentoring relationships between students and senior researchers through structured networking sessions, and small group activities.
Event Director, Associate Professor Ramiro Lafuente (UQ), an ARC Future Fellow and leading expert in geometric and nonlinear analysis, will lead the program in partnership with AMSI.
AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant said this funding will expedite program impact, strengthen the research training pipeline and enhance the work-readiness of research and coursework students in the mathematical sciences across Australia, South-East Asia and the Pacific.
“This funding will support AMSI’s ability to deliver an outstanding and impactful Winter School in 2026, with substantial participant involvement from South-East Asia and the Pacific,” AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant said.
Internationally, the School will strengthen academic ties between institutions in Australia, South-East Asia and the Pacific, encouraging research exchange and long-term partnerships.
Australian participants will benefit from cross-cultural exchange with their South-East Asian and Pacific Islander peers, gaining a more global research outlook and fostering skills essential for international and interdisciplinary research careers.

About AMSI Winter School
The AMSI Winter School is an advanced training program for post-graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, held annually around a central theme selected from emerging national and global research priorities in the mathematical sciences. Each two-week program provides a scaffolded, graduate-accessible introduction to current research developments, delivered by leading national and international experts.
The 2026 Winter School, hosted by the UQ School of Mathematics and Physics, will focus on Geometric Analysis—a field experiencing rapid global growth and of high demand among graduate students and early-career researchers due to its foundational role in modern mathematics.
