The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Ole Warnaar as our new Deputy Director, effective immediately.

A distinguished mathematician and Chair of Pure Mathematics at the University of Queensland, Professor Warnaar brings a wealth of experience and leadership to AMSI. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2008 and awarded the Australian Mathematical Society’s George Szekeres Medal in 2020 for his significant contributions to additive number theory, algebraic combinatorics, and special functions.

Professor Warnaar has been an active advocate for the mathematical sciences in Australia since arriving in 2000. He has held prominent leadership roles, including President (2021–2022) and Vice-President (2007–2009) of the Australian Mathematical Society. His contributions to national initiatives, such as the AMSI/AustMS/WIMSIG Maryam Mirzakhani Award Program and the Praeger–Henstridge Awards and Prizes, underscore his commitment to advancing mathematics in Australia.

AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant, expressed his enthusiasm for Professor Warnaar’s appointment:

“Ole is a well-respected leader in the mathematical sciences community, with a deep understanding of AMSI’s role in education, research, and industry engagement. His advocacy and strategic insight will be invaluable as AMSI continues to address key challenges in the discipline, including mathematics education, workforce development, and research funding.”

Professor Warnaar has played a pivotal role in shaping mathematics policy and education in Australia. He worked closely with AMSI during his tenure as AustMS President, leading efforts to influence the development of the Foundation to Year 10 Australian Mathematics Curriculum. His expertise in policy, funding, and strategic planning will be instrumental in strengthening AMSI’s impact across the sector.

Thanking Outgoing Deputy Director, Professor James McCoy

AMSI extends its sincere gratitude to Professor James McCoy for his outstanding contributions as Deputy Director (2023–2024). Professor McCoy, a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Newcastle, has been a dedicated advocate for AMSI’s mission, supporting key initiatives across education, research, and industry engagement.

“James has been a fantastic contributor to AMSI during his tenure, bringing strategic leadership and deep expertise to our programs. We thank him for his service and wish him continued success in his future endeavours,” said Professor Marchant.

Professor Warnaar will work alongside Professor Marchant and the AMSI Executive to continue AMSI’s leadership in advancing mathematics in Australia.
