The Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) has celebrated the exceptional contributions of Australia’s mathematicians at the 68th Annual Meeting, held in Auckland, New Zealand today.

Opening the event, AustMS President, Professor Jessica Purcell, congratulated the 2024 award winners for their outstanding achievements across research, teaching, and publication contributions to the mathematical sciences.

Jack Hall (University of Melbourne) and Jiakun Liu (University of Wollongong) were jointly awarded the 2024 AustMS Medal.

The AustMS Medal is awarded annually to members of the Society within 15 years of completing their PhD, in recognition of distinguished research in the mathematical sciences. Both recipients have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to advancing their fields.

The Society’s most prestigious honour, the George Szekeres Medal, was awarded to Susan M. Scott (Australian National University).

This medal recognises research excellence and outstanding support of the mathematical sciences. Professor Scott has made significant contributions to mathematical physics, with her work gaining international recognition for its impact on the study of spacetime and gravitational wave physics.

The 2024 Gavin Brown Prize for best paper was awarded to Shibing Chen, Jiakun Liu, and Xu-Jia Wang for their paper:
“Global regularity for the Monge-Ampѐre equation with natural boundary condition,” published in Annals of Mathematics (Vol. 194, No. 3, 2021, pp. 745-793).

This groundbreaking research addresses the global regularity of a fundamental equation in nonlinear partial differential equations, paving the way for advancements in both theory and applications.

AMSI Director, Professor Tim Marchant, highlighted the importance of recognising the achievements of Australian mathematicians through the AustMS awards.
