The occupation category of Mathematician, as assessed by VETASSESS, applies to Quantitative Analysts, Computational Scientists, and Operations Research Analysts.

Earlier this year AMSI endorsed the VETASSESS skills assessment criteria for the occupation.

Institute Director Professor Tim Marchant said there are shortages in many roles needing mathematical scientists, “and consequently salaries tend to be high.”

“The financial sector employs quantitative analysts, whilst data scientists are in demand across a broad range of corporates and government agencies,” he said.

Professor Marchant said most roles are in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra.

VETASSESS Executive Director Dr Mamta Chauhan welcomed the endorsement by AMSI and the Institute’s advice on skills assessment criteria.

“The occupation of mathematical sciences is also evolving as well as the scope of its application. It is important that the criteria used to assess people applying for skilled migration remains current and meets the current and emerging needs of Australian employers,” she said.

Details of the skills assessment criteria applying to Mathematicians, and an information sheet to download, are available here.
