A partnership with Defence will see up to 100 APR.Intern Students placed over four years to help drive innovation addressing national security challenges.
Announced today by Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince and Chief Defence Scientist, Dr Alex Zelinsky co-singed the agreement with Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) at the Pacific 2017 International Maritime Exposition in Sydney.
“AMSI welcomes this partnership as a signal of the Australian Government’s commitment to fostering essential research-industry collaboration to secure future defence innvovation capability,” says AMSI Director, Professor Geoff Prince.
From late 2017, APR.Intern will place some of the nation’s brightest science, technology, engineering and maths PhD students in real-world 3 to 6-month research projects with DST Group.
“This partnership will equip some of our brightest minds with critical industry skills, vital as we seek to secure Australia’s future STEM research workforce,” says Professor Prince.
AMSI’s internship program equips postgraduates to pursue valuable industry career pathways while working with universities and all-industry sectors to increase awareness of the value-add of strengthened high-level research engagement.
The program receives Department of Education and Training support through the Supporting more women in STEM careers: Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)—National Research Internship Program*.

While gender equity will form a strong focus, applications for the 100 internship placements are open to all eligible STEM postgraduate students seeking to develop essential industry skills while tackling critical high-impact security challenges. Importantly, this plays an essential role in skilling our research workforce to build and sustain Australia’s defence innovation capability.
