Released last week, the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) has welcomed recommendations from the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) to transform industry engagement with Australian research training.

Outlined in Securing Australia’s Future: Review of Australia’s Training System, the reforms form part of ACOLA’s recent review of Australian research training including consultation with over 80 sector stakeholders. Findings centre on student engagement and retention and work readiness of postgraduate research students.

AMSI Director Professor Prince praised ACOLA for its strong focus on university-industry engagement, including a national postgraduate internship program.

“This report acknowledges the vital role of industry engagement in preparing Australian graduates to drive innovation. Early, focused exposure to industry is critical to ensure our graduates are work-ready and understand the challenges facing industry today and in the future,” Professor Prince said.

ACOLA highlights a number of existing schemes driving research engagement with industry, including APR.Intern. Responding to this acknowledgement of the program’s excellence, Director, Professor Geoff Prince said the Institute’s unique positioning, with strong cross-discipline university membership and industry networks has been instrumental to its success.

“AMSI is at the frontline with APR.Intern the only national program equipping HDR candidates from all disciplines with the skills, knowledge and confidence to work with industry as we seek to develop a workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st Century,” he said.

In addition to its postgraduate internship program APR.Intern, the institute has received $2 million in co-funding from the Department of Education and Training to expand its successful research training programs and scholarships.
