AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince and the University of Western Australia’s Professor Cheryl Praeger have welcomed the recent appointment of four female maths professors at the University of Sydney as a step towards equality. Speaking in the Australian, Professor Prince said the news was not only a cause for celebration but a call to action. The second Australian woman appointed as a professor of mathematics after Hanna Neumann, Professor Praeger said the appointments gave women and girls something to aspire to and a sense a career at the level was possible. With women accounting for only 9 per cent of mathematics professorships across Australia in 2014, both agreed there was still a long way to go to achieve gender equality in mathematics. Read Article.
