The Australian Financial Review, published online Friday, 5 February 2016 and in print Monday, 15 February 2016. With Year 12 higher-level mathematics participation falling and many students uninspired by the current standard of teaching, AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince has warned that Australia needs to act now to save maths education and secure the nation’s technological future. In an opinion piece published by the Australian Financial Review he has urged universities to follow the University of Sydney’s lead and reintroduce mathematics prerequisites. Professor Prince believes this will not only lead to improved teacher quality but tackle the challenge of ‘ATAR gaming’ and equip students with the foundations for tertiary STEM study.
