AMSI is thrilled to announce Prof Hiroaki Kitano as a Mathematics of Planet Earth Australia Ambassador.

2013 is dedicated to the Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE). A year to communicate the vital role the mathematical sciences play in our globe – they have all the corners covered.

Famed for his creation of the robotic dog AIBO and for founding the Robotic Soccer World Cup, Prof Kitano, CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, is an exceptional asset for the year.

Over a decade ago Prof Kitano proposed “systems biology” as an emergent area of biology, made possible by genomics, molecular biology, computer science and other areas. Prof Kitano uses his knowledge of computing and robotics to understand and analyse biological processes.

“Systems biology holds great promise for human health and for industrial applications. It is a pleasure to welcome Professor Kitano to Australia in support of the International Year of the Mathematics of Planet Earth,” said Prof Geoff Prince, Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI).

When asked why he has become a MPE Ambassador, Prof Kitano replied: ‘Maths and stats are critical tools of thought. Their role as the common language of science and technology is pivotal to our world.’

Too few people are aware of this connection. MPE Australia’s mission is to remedy this.

Prof Kitano added that serious efforts must be made to radically improve early mathematics education.

AMSI strives to support high quality mathematics education for all young Australians.  And to promote the supply of mathematically well-prepared students entering tertiary education by direct involvement with schools.

Later this year Prof Kitano will advise us to ‘act beyond borders’ when he presents two public lectures, in Melbourne and Sydney, to explore the MPE theme: A planet to discover.

RSVP for these free lectures here.

Media are invited to meet with Prof Kitano at AMSI on Wednesday 8 May 2013 between 08:30 am – 09:30 am. Building 161, Monash Road, University of Melbourne VIC 3010
