AMSI is pleased to announce its membership of Science and Technology Australia (STA). Positive collaborations with STA are crucial in gaining greater influence where it counts: parliament.

“This is a very welcome development,” said Jan Thomas, former Vice-President of the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (now STA) and Senior Fellow at AMSI. “In its ten years since being established, AMSI has become the key body developing policy and strategies for the mathematical sciences from school level to cutting edge research,” she said.

“The mathematical sciences are crucial to science and technology and this development will be of benefit to both AMSI and STA. There are many aspects of programs run by AMSI that will be of interest to STA members, and vice versa,” Ms Thomas continued.

Director of AMSI, Professor Geoff Prince, believes that “AMSI’s direct engagement with the peak bodies of other disciplines through STA will improve advocacy outcomes and create new partnerships.” The membership strengthens the active collaboration between the mathematical sciences community and STA. It will give AMSI the opportunity to achieve greater outreach with industry and government, and to join forces with other national organisations.

STA has a strong track record in effective engagement with government and support for science and technology. AMSI is looking forward to standing with all members of STA to elevate the status of science and mathematics in Australia.

As a member of STA, AMSI will be sending two delegates to the Science meets Parliament forum in September. The forum will allow AMSI to extend its role as an advocate for mathematics and statistics. Mathematics underpins broad economic and social issues and is critical to innovation. AMSI’s membership of STA will ensure that the importance of these disciplines remains at the forefront of politicians’ and senior public servants’ minds.
