Running for 4 weeks during the summer break, the 9th annual AMSI Summer School attracted more than 90 honours and PhD students from around Australia. This year the University of Adelaide hosted the Summer School.

The summer school is funded by DEEWR under the Collaborative and Structural Reform grant with sponsorship from AMSI, AustMS and University of Adelaide.

Assoc. Prof. Finnur Larusson, 2011 AMSI Summer School Director, said: “The AMSI Summer School is one of the big annual events in the Australian mathematics calendar.”

“The students worked very hard over the four weeks of the Summer School.  They benefited not only from attending lectures, but also from interacting with their peers and being part of a lively group of enthusiastic students from 18 different universities.  Intense academic work was complemented by enrichment lectures, social events, a careers afternoon, and other special events that were well attended.”

Eight honours-level courses in pure and applied mathematics and statistics were offered, often allowing students the opportunity to study courses not available at their home university.

The Careers Afternoon – attended by CSIRO, DSTO, BoM and the ABS – enabled students to make contacts and explore careers available to them in the mathematical sciences.

Students said: “The AMSI Summer School was a wonderful experience to learn interesting mathematics in a fun environment, whilst making great friends.”

“The AMSI Summer School was an excellent learning and social experience.  I believe it has set me up perfectly with the knowledge and contacts to succeed in my PhD.”
