Fraction of a quantity
Fractions can also be represented geometrically by using suitably chosen rectangles. This is done in the following question.
Question 2
Find \(\dfrac{1}{8}\) of 96.
Solution
Divide 96 into 8 equal parts.
96 ÷ 8 =12.
Each part is 12.
\(\dfrac{1}{8}\) of 96 = 12.
The following diagram illustrates this. There are 96 small squares shown in the diagram. Each of these has an area of 1 cm².
